I was born in a year when floods ravaged the central interior of British Columbia, and have enjoyed the drama of our natural world ever since. My art is intimately connected to the beauty of the earth and is my response to how the physical has affected personal relationships, and to the priviledge of being able to explore my world at home and further away. I have not yet found my home medium, and continue to develop my interests in quilting, acrylic painting, chinese brush painting, film and digital photography(manipulated images), pine needle baskets, polymer clay jewellery, and collage, with several other interests waiting in the wings. There is so much information available in this modern world of communication that it's not really accurate to say that I'm self taught in most of what I do. I have gleaned methodology from many print sources and fellow artists including Marlene Easterbrook(chinese brush) and Ed Hill(acrylics in the style of Roy Henry Vickers).
My work has been shown in solo shows at the "Blue Moose" in Hope, the interpretive centre at Manning Park and at group shows in Chilliwack, Harrison Hot Springs, and Hope Arts Gallery in BC, with some of it travelling to make its home internationally in Europe and the USA. It has been a pleasure and priviledge to present Celebrating Creation 2001, Kaleidescope 2002, Collage 2003, Double Vision 2004, and Colour Collective 2005, duo shows with art partner Shirley Wotherspoon. Colour Collective 2005 will be shown at the Rockwell Gallery in Harrison Hot Springs for the month of September 2005.
I work full time as a postal clerk, am married to Clancy and in my spare time I hike, ski, write poetry, garden, and very occasionally, do housework as required. I can be contacted at jwolpert@uniserve.com
